Marine injured in Iraq

By Barbara Phillips Long, Shippensburg Bureau Chief

Sgt. Ryan German, who is serving his third tour with the Marines in Iraq, was injured last weekend.

German, the son of Sue and Dave German of Shippensburg, called his family Saturday night to say that an improvised explosive device blew up part of the humvee he was riding in. Sue German said her son told her he was ejected from the humvee when the IED went off. Then he saw a white flash and the vehicle lifted up.

Ryan German was thrown from the humvee and landed in a crater about six feet deep. Sue German says that a firefight followed the explosion, and that all five Marines in the lead humvee were injured and had to move to the second vehicle for protection. Ryan German's injuries include a severe concussion and injuries to his face and neck from shrapnel, but the safety glasses and protective gear he was wearing helped prevent further injuries.

After Ryan German led the troops back to camp, a group of four humvees went back out, and one man was killed on that trip.

Sue German said her son was asked if he wanted to come home, and he said he told the Marines wanted to return to his unit. He was hospitalized in Balad Military Hospital in Saqlawiyah, Iraq, a city in Al Anbar Province. Sue German said he may be reassigned in Iraq until he has recovered sufficiently to return to his unit.

Ryan German received a Purple Heart after he was shot in Fallujah on May 13, 2006, during his second tour of duty in Iraq. The family expects the third tour to end sometime in February.
