Mayor Ron Oden and Councilman Chris Mills are pushing for city authorities to offer local Marines back from Iraq discount packages to Palm Springs hotels and attractions, including Knotts Soak City, a city spokesperson said Monday.

The discount would be given to Iraq veterans assigned to the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

Oden and Mills plan to take their proposal to the City Council on Sept. 19, said spokesperson Cindy Uken. The two also want to explore, with the cooperation of the base, the possibility of making family therapists more readily available to returning Marines and their families, Uken said.

Oden and Mills' proposals were met with appreciation by base officials.

"We're always looking for opportunities for the young Marines and sailors that are either single or here with their families, to have a way to come back ... and just forget about everything," Twentynine Palms community liaison officer Jim Ricker said.

"We have some folks who are on either their second, third, or fourth combat tour. We really need a way to get them to just kind of exhale and relax with their friends and family," Rucker said.

Ricker estimated 90 percent of Marines living on the base travel to Palm Springs for shopping and entertainment opportunities.

Oden and Mills first became interested in offering a special reward programs to the Marines during a recent six-hour tour of the 932-square-mile base, Uken said.
