I am 28 years old as of July 23rd this year. I have 85 hours of college credit but no degree yet, I'm shipping out November 5th. My recruiter is telling me I can still be an officer after a year of enlistment doing the MECEP program, yet what I'm reading on www.about.com (http://www.about.com) says I'm too old.

I was wondering if anyone out there has some current information that could help me out. Will I have a chance to get a commission through any other means than meritious?

You can get a waiver for your age...HOWEVER

if your final goal is to lead Marines as a Marine Officer, WHY ARE YOU ENLISTING?? You're already 28. Usually MECEP/ECP Applicants need to be Corporal or above (waiverable but rare). 28+2-3 years to pick up Corporal = 30-31

But if you try to get out of your enlisted contract right now, NO OCS SELECTION BOARD WILL EVER GIVE YOU A CHANCE.

So...

lol I don't know. Good luck dude. Apply for the Naval Academy or something.

If you want to be an officer then just finish your degree and head that way. One waiver (age) is easier to get then two (age and rank). Now that I typed this, I see JCam has already said it, but I'm not going to delete!

Unfortunately, the age limit for the naval academy is 22.

I enlisted because I wanted to be a Marine and patience hasnt been a strong point for me. As for the commission, I was wondering what my options would be if I decide to make a career in the service and to be honest I hadn't considered that there would be age restrictions when I had decided to sign up.

My family's history with the military has only been Army and Navy, and hell, Army will take you till you're 40.
