Southern Oregon Marine talks about second deployment to Iraq

Associated Press - August 24, 2007 4:45 PM ET

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A Southern Oregon Marine is sharing his experiences from overseas with the city of Medford.

Major Mark Boone puts on a uniform with both the Marines and the Medford Police Department.

Boone was first deployed in 2003 for eight months. He was then sent back nearly ten months ago to Al Anbar -- 1 of the most dangerous places in Iraq. He says his second tour was more intense and dangerous. He lost one Marine and seven from his company were injured.

Boone says he is closer to these Marines "than I have ever been in my 16 years in the Marine Corps."

Overseas, Boone worked to help strengthen the Iraqi Police force. He says the war is from from over, but progress is being made.

Back in Medford, he is a patrol sergeant and runs the k-9 program. He says it's important to spend time with his wife and son, since another deployment is inevitable.
