View Full Version : Asvab Scores
How long are your asvab scores eligilbe for after you take the test. I made the mistake of eating at a sketchy macdonalds before I took the test and had food poisoning issues during the test. Afterwords they gave me my score which one of the recruiters took and lost. My recruiter couldn't find my name in the computer for months and I was supposed to go back up and fill out some investigation form and then out of the blue he says he found them. The scores were high enough for me to get what I wanted but still pretty low QT48 MM98 GT99 EL106 CL102. The scores they showed me at MEPS after the test were higher QT78 (dont really remeber) but they told me the scores I saw were someone elses with my name on them. That was some six months ago, how long will the scores work before I need to retake the test, and if I go in with the QT48 score will that limit me in anyway?

Unless it has changed, the ASVAB scores are good for two years. But you can retake the test after 30 days, I believe.

As far as the QT score goes... I'd say it would limit you in MOS's available to you (as far as I know) because from the MOS's I looked at for myself, the line scores are important. I don't have my score sheet in front of me, but I do remember I scored over 100 on all my line scores and it keeps me qualified for alot of MOS's.
BUT
Google "Marine Corps MOS" and there should be a link from about.com that breaks down the requirements for every MOS, such as required ASVAB scores, but as always confirm those answers with a recruiter.
Hope that helped.

I was also just informed today that I get a "kicker" on the Montgomery GI Bill due to my score. I am going in as a reservist, but I will recieve 36K instead of 18K.

I qualify for everything I am interested in Infantry, Armor, and Artillery. My recruiter told me that there is a 1 pt leeway. So if I got a GT99 they could get me into GT100 jobs. Anyone ever heard of that?

I dunno, I took my ASVAB in 2002 in high school and it was still good for my OCS Application in 2007...

That MGIB "kicker" is there and if I were you I'd take advantage of it. But it's there for everyone, some recruiters just don't mention it very often. It just means that you pay 100 dollars a month on your MGIB for I think 18 months instead of 12. But in the long run you'll get more out of it if you intend on going to college. I couldn't tell you how long an ASVAB score is good for...for most MOS's the line score that means the most is your GT score. If you're good as far as scores are concerned for the MOS that you want...then don't worry about getting a new score until you want to switch into a more high speed MOS.

My recruiter told me it was 18 months for the MGIB, but I believe you only have access to it after 8 years of service if I remember correctly. However he said to not do it would be stupid even if you don't plan on doing it.

If you don't use it...all you're doing is throwing away money. You toss anywhere between $1000-$1,800 on the MGIB. You can also pursue military related degrees through AMU (American Military University) if you don't like normal college courses. For example I'm working on my bachelors degree in intelligence studies with a major in counter-intelligence. There are many doors out there that are opened to you once you join the Marine Corps.

How much time do you have to take towards AMU???
Can you explain further.
Like does your work interfere? what about when your in the field?

You basically do your classes on your own time online. You have to have 120 credit hours to get a bachelor's degree. Once you get to the fleet you usually get off of work around 1630. The rest of the night is yours to do what you need. I'm using that time and taking college courses. It doesn't swamp me or anything but it does take time. But just like anything else does.

Thanks for the Info LCpl.
Hey Covey, is it possible to continue education in the Marines while on active duty then pick up with a college or university after your out of the Marines to earn your bachelors?

Yes it is possible. There's an agreement that AMU has with other Universities so that when you get out and want to go to a different college...all your college credit will transfer. It's a really good set-up for active duty Marines. Just a side note...you can actually get everything paid for through AMU by using a program called TA (tuition assistance). There's a limit to how many credit hours it will cover in a semester. But you can take advantage of it and not even have to touch your MGIB. TA covers your books and everything.
