JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — IED detection is stretching to new depths at a North Carolina port used by military installations.

The Port of Morehead City has been awarded a $66,188 grant to purchase an underwater improvised explosive device detection system, according to a North Carolina State Ports Authority news release.

The portable system, called the Underwater Intrusion Detection/Scanning System, can be operated by one person to scan for IEDs along berthing areas before a ship’s arrival and then scan the ship itself. The eight-pound, remotely operated vehicle has a video camera and can get into tight places inaccessible to divers.

This system has been tested and proven by U.S. Customs, the Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers, according to the release.

The Port of Wilmington, a city about 50 miles south of Camp Lejeune, already has the system, a ports spokeswoman said.

Both ports are used by the major military installations in the state, including Lejeune; Marine Corps Air Stations Cherry Point and New River; Fort Bragg; Pope Air Force Base; and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
