A U.S. serviceman who was injured 24 years ago when his barracks was bombed in Beirut, Lebanon, may be on the verge of collecting damages.

A U.S. District Court entered a judgment against the Islamic Republic of Iran that would allow Marine Lance Cpl. Terry Valore of Pennsylvania and the relatives of Marines killed in the attack to recover damages, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Monday.

Valore, who was burned over 90 percent of his body, is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit charging Iran with backing the attack that was carried out by Hezbollah militants.

Whether Valore and the other plaintiffs get any of Iran's money depends on the passage of legislation allowing recovery of damages from Iranian assets frozen by the U.S. government.

We're trying to put pressure on Congress to get it to a vote," Valore, 45, told the Tribune-Review.

Valore said terrorists exploit loopholes in the law by hiding behind sovereign immunity that shields foreign governments from prosecution.
