Water rescue aids boaters and Marines
Published Sunday August 19 2007

Beaufort Water Search and Rescue had its hands full Wednesday night when two men got stranded in the marsh after their boat sank in the Beaufort River. They swam, in the dark, along Archers Creek, then saw Shell Point across the marsh. They figured they would walk there. "That's when they got into trouble," said Dick Jennings, skipper of Beaufort Water Search and Rescue.

The guard posted at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island heard them yelling for help and alerted Parris Island Fire Department. The department sent two Marines and a paramedic in a boat to find them.

"The tide was going out," Jennings said, and the rescue boat ran aground. So water rescue sent out its boat from a different direction and collected the two boaters, and their would-be rescuers, whose boat was "high and dry by then," Jennings said. No one was injured.
