WESTMINSTER – Nicholson Pipes and Drums, a Westminster-based band, raised about $2,200 at their summer concert -- at the Civic Center's Sunken Gardens two weeks ago -- to help U.S. Marines and their wives from a U.S. Marine battalion go to a Marine Ball.

Councilman Andy Quach donated $1,000 of that money, said band director, Malcolm Willis. Last year, the city officially adopted the 3 {+r}{+d}Assault Amphibian Vehicle Battalion, 1 {+s}{+t}Marine Division.

The band is also collecting formal gowns for the wives and girlfriends of the Marines through September. Those interested may bring any size gown, clean and marked with the size on a hangar to: Westminster Community Services, 8200 Westminster Blvd.

Nicholson Pipes and Drums will have yet another opportunity at the city's 50 {+t}{+h}Anniversary Banquet on Sept. 8 at the Rose Center to raise funds for the Marines. The band is also hoping to put on a free performance with the Marine band in the Sunken Gardens on the afternoon of Sept. 8 before the banquet.
