Camp Lejeune to add civilians to police force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Civilian police officers will be hired to supplement military police after a Marine Corps committee decided more security was needed at Marine installations, Camp Lejeune officials announced Friday.
The coastal base doesn’t expect the plan to be implemented for about three years but planning should begin next year, said Camp Lejeune spokesman 1st Lt. Craig Thomas. The recommendation was handed down by the Marine Requirements Oversight Counsel.
The Marine Corps concluded that military police need help at bases, air stations and elsewhere, according to a statement from Camp Lejeune.
Civilian police already are stationed at gates into the Army’s Fort Bragg, a change made after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to free military officers for combat and other duty.
