I hope that you have been paying attention to the news media of late. In additon to the numerous articles posted on leatherneck!
This by way of affirming to you that you are entering a profession that is very serious indeed.
This is why a number of us have, at times, been so hard on you. We want you to wake up and pay attention. This profession is not a movie or make believe or any sort of video game. Real people live and die acording to what you know and how well you do your jobs...when you become a United States Marine.
There is much to learn, and the hope of many Veteran Marines is that you will become better than we were at what we did.
Our hope is that you will learn to do everything we did for all of the right reasons.
We know that it is no game. Some few of you are beginning to begin to understand that.
Yet, we have only given you a taste of the flavour of what it is to become a United States Marine.
There is a time for peace and a time for war. It is our hope that war will come no more. It is, however, our experience that war will be with us for quite some time to come.
We would have you be ready so that you will not know the loss of a buddy, a friend, a brother.
We are often hard on you, for we care...perhaps more than we should. For you hope to be our brothers in time.
We want you to carry the banner, fully knowing what you have gotten yourselves into and why. Thus will the nation and our Marine Corps remain great. Thus will you raise and keep the standard for those to come.
You are the standard bearers of tomorrow.
Great things will be required of you.
We want you to be ready.
