The memory of Marine Gunnery Sgt. Ronald E. Baum lives on for Marines and sailors, especially for those who follow in his work.

The Marine Corps last month dedicated Baum Hall as part of the new Navy-Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center Counterintelligence/Human Intelligence Complex at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va.

Baum of Hollidaysburg was killed May 3, 2004, when his Humvee was struck by a mortar round during combat operations outside Fallujah, Iraq.

He had volunteered to serve as chief for an intelligence team in support of the 2nd Battalion,2nd Marine Regiment.

“It’s a testament to his leadership and the mark he left on the Marine Corps,” Baum’s brother Brian said about the hall dedicated in his memory. “They’ll know everything he’s done.”

The hall will be used for the 161/2 weeks of entry-level training in counterintelligence and human intelligence for Marines and sailors, the Navy said in a news release.

Baum’s family helped cut the ribbon to open Baum Hall. They also were presented with the Purple Heart awarded posthumously to Baum.

Baum started his Marine career as an anti-tank assaultman but changed his military occupation in 1992. Brian Baum and his brother joined the Marines together in 1986.

“They already have done so much for him,” Brian Baum said of the Marine Corps.

The Marines previously announced the start of the GySgt Ronald E. Baum Teamwork Award, an honor given to the Marine who performs the best in a human intelligence course and exemplifies Baum’s leadership and teamwork.

Baum also has a classroom named in his memory at the Navy’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School in Brunswick, Maine. He taught resistance and survival in a prisoner of war situation.
