Marines and Sailors to return Thursday

Tuesday, Aug 14, 2007 - 11:56 AM

By Curtis L. Hill, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC
Approximately 170 Marines and sailors of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, will return from Operation Iraqi Freedom on Thursday after a seven-month deployment.

The Teufelhunden Battalion recently turned over their battlespace west of Fallujah in the Habbaniyah region. The turnover was highlighted by a dramatic reduction of violence and transition of security responsibility to local Iraqi Security Forces. Marines and sailors from the battalion conducted both independent and joint counterinsurgency operations with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division and Iraqi Police in the towns of Husaybah, Sadiqiyah, Bidimnah and the western Fallujah Peninsula. During these operations, Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces conducted combat operations as well as civil engagement that included rebuilding schools and other municipal services for local Iraqis. Third Battalion, 6th Marines was instrumental in facilitating engagement with the Albu Issa tribe, which precipitated the dismantling of Al Qaeda and their influence in the greater Fallujah region. The battalion also established the initial Iraqi Provincial Security Forces in the Fallujah Peninsula area and assisted in the establishment of the Habbaniyah Police Academy.
