Marines' challenge run to raise money

The Marines of Fox Company, 4th LAR Battalion will host the 14th U.S. Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge Run Sept. 22.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Marines of Fox Company, 4th LAR Battalion will host the 14th U.S. Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge Run on Saturday, Sept. 22.The event, expected to attract more than 1,600 participants from the Southeast, will take place at the McCrady Army National Guard Training Facility in Eastover, S.C.The event is hosted to raise money for the Greater Marine Corps Foundation of South Carolina, a nonprofit organization. The foundation uses the funds for community outreach, such as scholarships for high school students in the area, and to provide financial assistance to the families of Marines that are killed or injured in combat.The Challenge Run includes the first "Kids' Polywog" for children 12 and under. The day's main event is the Ultimate Challenge Mud Run, which is roughly 4.2 miles in length. The Mud Run consists of teams of four, on a mud and guts, obstacle filled cross-country course through the training areas of Fort Jackson. The course requires running, jumping, climbing, slogging, sloshing, determination and team cooperation. Obstacles include walls, rope climbs, rope swings, mud pits and more.
