In the face of a powerful sandstorm, the Army's 3rd Infantry Division advanced to within 50 miles of the city and pounded military installations on the southern outskirts of Baghdad overnight with howitzers and rockets.
U.S.-led forces closed in on Baghdad, where the distant crash of artillery could be heard early Tuesday. U.S. warplanes and helicopters came under heavy fire during their first attacks on Saddam Hussein's elite ground units, while tenacious resistance kept the coalition from securing key cities in southern Iraq.
The Iraqi capital awoke to howling winds and skies clouded by storms and smoke from fuel fires meant to obscure targets within the city. Few cars or people were on the streets as all of Baghdad appeared to be hunkered down for the coming battle.
