Since World War II, Marines going into battle have carried essentially the same first-aid kit: a roll of gauze, a muslin compression bandage, a few Band-Aids, a general field dressing and another dressing for eye injuries.

But for war with Iraq, they have an updated kit that includes a gel for burns, a tourniquet that can be applied with one hand and a special clotting agent for serious injuries.

QuikClot is a granular substance that when poured into a serious wound draws the water and plasma from blood, rapidly stopping bleeding until medical help is available. It was developed last year by Connecticut-based Z-Medica in partnership with the Office of Naval Research and the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab at Quantico.
