Motorcycle Run Planned To Honor Waterford Marine Killed In Iraq

Published on 8/9/2007

A motorcycle run to benefit the scholarship fund honoring Marine Cpl. Kemaphoon “Ahn” Chanawongse, a Waterford Marine killed in action in Iraq, will take place Sunday, Aug. 26. Nowhere Café in New London, the Freedom Riders U.S.A. and the Leathernecks U.S.M.C. will sponsor the ride.

Registration is $10 per person. All money will be donated to the scholarship fund dedicated in his name. Registration for the run is open from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Young Marines will make a color guard presentation at 11:30 a.m., and Marines from Chanawongse's unit will give a blessing in their fallen comrade's honor at noon, when the riders leave. This year state Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, state Rep. Betsy Ritter, D-Waterford, and New London City Councilor Rob Pero will attend.

Chanawongse was a 1999 graduate of Waterford High School who enlisted in the Marines Corps shortly after he graduated. He was killed in a firefight at An Nasiriyah, Iraq, in March 2003 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The run starts and ends on Colman Street at the Nowhere Café. Riders then has four optional check-in points at the Handlebar in Pawcatuck, the Old Mill tavern in Norwich, Two Brothers in Voluntown and the Brown Derby in Montville.

Riders must check in at one of these locations before returning to New London.
