As the sun set over the desert, the roar of helicopters at a secret air base was briefly silenced Sunday as the echo of a somber tune from a lone bugler sounded an emotional farewell for four U.S. Marines killed in the early hours of the war against Iraq.

As coalition forces pressed toward Baghdad, about 200 members of the U.S. 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing gathered in a hanger to remember Capt. Jay Aubin, a pilot from Waterville, Maine; Capt. Ryan Beaupre, another pilot from St. Anne, Illinois; Staff Sgt. Kendall Waters-bey, a crew chief from Baltimore; and Cpl. Brian Kennedy, another crew chief from Port Clyde, Maine.

The men were flying British Royal Marines to southern Iraq, when their CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter crashed and burned early Friday in Kuwait about nine miles (15 kilometers) south of the Iraqi.
