U.S. Marines have successfully taken two bridges across the Euphrates in the city of Nasiriyah, 200 miles southeast of Baghdad, NBC’s Kerry Sanders reported. But in the fight for the city of 300,000 a number of U.S. troops were captured by Iraqi forces, according to early reports. Twelve American soldiers who are part of a maintenance unit attached to the 3rd Infantry Division are now unaccounted for, U.S. military sources told NBC News.
The Arab satellite station Al-Jazeera aired footage Sunday of interviews with what the station identified as captured American prisoners, and also showed bodies in uniform in an Iraqi morgue that it said were Americans.
The fight for the bridges in Nasiriyah took more than five hours, wounding some Marines who were then flown from the battlefield, Sanders reported. Their wounds were not life threatening, officials said.
Iraqi soldiers remained in the city, Sanders said, and were raining sniper fire on U.S. forces at dusk Sunday. Complicating the fight, Sanders reported, the Iraqi soldiers had flooded the streets with women and children.
