WAILUKU, Hawaii — The Molokai landfill was closed Monday following the discovery of more than 100 pieces of what appeared to be unexploded ordnance.

The area was secured by police and a military explosive ordnance disposal team was slated to examine the items Tuesday, Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said.

The landfill is to remain closed until further notice, Martin said.

The items were found by workers employed by Schnitzer Steel Hawaii, the company that handles recycling at the landfill, she said.

The items, some measuring as long as 2 feet, were discovered near the back of the landfill, near the recycling area, Martin said.

There was no indication how old the items are or how long they have been at the landfill, she said.
