Forty-six inscribed bricks, planted at the base of the flagpole in Lemoyne's Negley Park, honor local veterans -- some living, others long dead -- for their service from World War I to Desert Storm.
But there's room for more bricks -- 1,554 more to be exact.
Robert Farver, commander of Lemoyne American Legion Post 914, said he hopes bricks will eventually cover the entire fenced-in square around the flagpole erected by Lemoyne's American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
Farver figures the shady spot, beside the playground and commanding a sweeping view of the Susquehanna River and Harrisburg, can accommodate 1,600 bricks.
"This is a starter. I want to fill it up, anybody living or dead," said Farver, 80, who has a brick noting his Naval service in World War II.
So far, the bricks represent veterans from the Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force who served as far away as the Philippines, Kuwait and the Aleutian Islands.
Post 914 started the brick project in 2005 during the borough's centennial celebration, but brick sales have flagged.
Farver hopes to revive interest in the project.
He figures there are many veterans from previous wars, and men and women now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, who have links to Lemoyne. Nearly 500 veterans from World War II alone are listed in Lemoyne's Centennial book.
"We don't care what war they're from. If you know someone from the Civil War, great," Farver said.
The cost is $35 for a 4-by-8-inch brick with three lines of inscription or $75 for an 8-by-8-inch brick with five lines.
Applications to buy a brick are available at the borough office at 510 Herman Ave. or from Farver, who can be reached at 761-1151.
