A reservist has been awarded the military’s third-highest decoration for combat valor, the Silver Star, for actions in Iraq in 2005.

Sgt. Jeff Hunter received the medal June 18 at the Albuquerque, N.M., city hall for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action” with 2nd Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, between May 25 and July 28, 2005.

The citation lauded the sergeant, now in the Individual Ready Reserve, for pulling his squad leader to safety during an ambush and attempting to retrieve a wounded Marine in another incident.

“By his bold leadership, wise judgment and complete dedication to duty, Sgt. Hunter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service,” according to a press release from Marine Corps Mobilization Command in Kansas City, Mo.
