Navy medical corpsman killed in Iraq

CAMP PENDLETON -- The Pentagon on Wednesday announced the death of a Camp Pendleton medical corpsman; it said he was killed in Diyala province, south of Baghdad.
Hospitalman Daniel S. Noble, 21, died Tuesday from what was described only as the result of enemy action, the Pentagon said.
A native of Whittier, Noble was assigned to the base's 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force Pacific.
Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cindy Moore said Noble enlisted in the service Oct. 4, 2005, and achieved the rank of hospitalman on April 16 of this year.
Medical corpsmen such as Noble are assigned to individual platoons to serve as emergency medical responders for sick and injured Marines. The corpsmen commonly are called "docs" by their squad mates.
Through mid-July, 82 Navy service members have perished in Iraq, most assigned to specialties such as Navy SEALs, pilots and corpsmen duties, according to Defense Department statistics.
Moore said that Noble is the 30th medical corpsman to be killed in Iraq.
At least 3,336 U.S. service members have died in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion. Noble's death brings the number of Camp Pendleton and Miramar troops to die in Iraq to at least 332.
About 8,000 Camp Pendleton-based Marines and sailors are currently serving in Iraq, with the majority assigned to the Anbar province west of the Iraqi capital.
