Deserter's blog: Marine in Boulder

By Christine Reid, Daily Camera
July 13, 2007

A Marine investigator said deserter Lance Hering posted on his MySpace page that he was staying at his parent's house in Boulder, sparking a search of the home earlier this week.

Boulder police didn't find any evidence of the 22-year-old lance corporal, who authorities say staged a hiking accident last August in Eldorado Canyon so he would not have to return to duty.

Hering's parents, Lloyd and Elynne Hering, said they haven't seen their son since he went missing and were surprised to receive a call from the Marines on Tuesday, followed by a visit from police.

"I don't have any news, I don't have any information and I don't have Lance," Lloyd Hering said Thursday. "It's fine for the police to go where he is, but he's not here. ... We love our boy and hope he's OK."

Hering's parents said they were not aware of any profile kept by their son on MySpace.com, a social networking site, and a search by the Camera did not reveal one that could be conclusively linked to the Boulder native.

But according to a police report released Thursday, a Marine investigator called Boulder authorities Tuesday to say he had come across what he thought was Hering's MySpace page, in which Hering indicated he had been staying with his parents.

The investigator asked Boulder police to check out the Endicott Drive home after speaking with Elynne Hering and not being "satisfied by her responses to his questions," the report said.

Two Boulder officers arrived at the Hering home at 2:22 p.m., and Elynne Hering told them Lance was not there. She initially denied their request to search the home, then asked to call her attorney.

Officers were then allowed to search the house and left at 4:05 p.m. after finding nothing.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. M. Chvojka, who wouldn't give his first name, declined to comment on the case. He said "somebody" is looking for Hering even though officials at Camp Pendleton, where his unit is based, have said they don't actively search for missing Marines because it would take too much manpower.

Hering is wanted by local authorities for faking his disappearance and on a felony warrant for violating probation from a 2004 attempted burglary conviction. He's also wanted by federal authorities for not returning to his Marine unit.

His friend Steve Powers, who helped stage the disappearance, pleaded guilty to false reporting and was ordered to pay the Boulder County Sheriff's Office the $33,000 spent during a five-day search for Hering.

Powers did not return calls from the Camera this week. He previously said Hering's life was in danger because of something he saw fellow Marines do during their tour in Iraq.
