Washington, D.C. - infoZine - President John Adams signed into law "An Act for Establishing and Organizing a Marine Corps." The next day, Adams named William Ward Burrows as the major commandant of the new corps. When he became commandant, there were 881 officers and enlisted men in the marines. Today, the U.S. Marine Corps has 18,000 officers and 151,000 enlisted personnel.
