Volunteers Offer Free Car Rides To Marines

(CBS) PALM SPRINGS, Calif. A group of Coachella Valley residents has taken it upon themselves to give free car rides to Marines who find themselves stuck at Palm Springs International Airport with orders to report for duty at Twentynine Palms, a $160 cab ride away, it was reported Sunday.

The Desert Sun said volunteers have given free lifts to some 240 soldiers reporting for duty at the Marine Corps' "Mojave Viper" training center, 50 miles away from the airport.

"These guys risk their lives for us, and they have to go through all this crap to get to the base," remarked Erica Stone, a La Quinta resident who has helped organize the group.

"They have no idea what it's going to take to get to the base," she said.

Soldiers are more than grateful for the thousands of dollars in gas and mileage that the volunteers have donated. "Especially considering that we don't make much money, it helps a lot," said Pfc. Daniel Myers in a thank-you letter.

Stone told the Desert Sun she is not thrilled to have to use her own car to get soldiers to their base. "If they can't even provide decent armory, what makes me think they're going to provide gas funds?" she asked the newspaper.
