Swimming Requirements for Boot Camp

Are Recruits required to be strong swimmers before Bootcamp? My son can swim, but I wouldn't call him a strong swimmer. What exactly will they test him on? Survival skills? Treading water? Floating? Doing the Crawl?

What kind of swimming PT should he be doing in this month and a half to prepare for Boot Camp?

I think I basically answered my own question while doing some searching...they have to swim with full uniform and gun across a pond and then tread water for a certain amount of time? A Marine said his legs felt like rubber...but I don't remember the tip he gave to recruits to help them get through this requirement. Anyone want to offer their advice?
