Having been on 3 West Pacs ive visited many ports of call. And i do have to say , Olongapo city was the best! Although Pattaya Beach was a close second. When i try to tell people about these places they look at me as if i was making things up. Little do they know , right Marines!! Its really sad they closed down OLONGAPO. But it will live on in my memories and all who have visited this playground for Marines. Long live the P.I. :flag:

By William M. Welch (http://www.usatoday.com/community/tags/reporter.aspx?id=648), USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — For tens of thousands of U.S. Marines in Southern California, new orders from the brass amount to: Baghdad si, Tijuana no.
Citing a wave of violence and murder in Mexico, the commanding officer of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton has made the popular military "R&R" destinations of Tijuana and nearby beaches effectively off-limits for his Marines.
The order by Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland restricts travel into Mexico by the 44,000 members of the unit, many of whom have had multiple tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and other combat zones under their belts — or are there now.
The limits were first put in place for the Christmas holiday. Last week the commander extended the order indefinitely, said Mike Alvarez, civilian public information officer for the unit at Camp Pendleton.
"The situation in Mexico is now more dangerous than usual," he said. "The intent is just to look out for the Marines' safety and well-being."

Haha ... We were over in Rock Hampton, training with the British Royal Marines back in '03 participating in Croc ... Would go back in a second ... Long flight, but so worth it ... Ended up getting some ink in Brisbane at West Coast Tattoo, a pretty appropriate name ... Lol ... Clubs were fun, and the Brisbane Lions, a rugby team, had won some championship while we were there ... Ended up partying at the same club ... It was fun and I miss it ...

I did that in 2002 (I was with the reserves by that time). At the North Shoals Training area. Which I guess is basically in the Rock Hampton Area.

We did a force swap and the Aussies got to drive our LAV's back in Pendleton and we theirs. Dude, they had refrigerators in the LAV's. And actual cooks in the field. Food like steak and eggs in the morning and fresh fruit all day. Porn in the LAV's... ahh it was heaven.

Kim Village Oki.

Right outside of Camp Hanson, second only to Hotel St, in Hawaii.

I unfortunately I got stuck in Oki for R&R. On my return to Vietnam from a Hospital stay in Guam. They gave me a 7 day layover at Camp Hansen. I spent my entire R&R plus a months advance pay in Kim Village.

The New York Bar was my favorate hang out. KaKo was my favorite B-Girl. When she asked me my name, I told her it ewas BoB'o -

Upon my return from Vietnam, 5 months later, I walked into the Ny Bar, and from across the dance floor, came a very high pitched, BOB'O.

So for me, it definately was Kim Village.
Hi. Jay here good day. I, was at Camp Smidley D. Butler aka Camp Hanson On Oki. and was wondering did they re name it as it was Kin. Town, or Kinville. right across the street was basically main town. Kobi steak house down the right. Straight across the street you could get a Banana Boat, and a Dog leg. (It was a very large fried Chicken leg. so hence the dog leg saying. Late night before hitting main gate, lol. and is jimmys Photo still there.and i remember that Bar as well lol june 75 I, Co.3/4 FMF BLT.and 79. You made me FLASH for a moment Brother, Thank you. I guess it was Quantico.
Two reasons ...
First, there was a German Beer hall up on the highway, think the name was the Bratwurst House or something like that. Great place, but it’s gone now.
Second, I could make it home to my High School sweet heart and future bride every weekend I didn't have duty. And for the record, we are still married 38 years later and have 3 wonderful grown kids.

No question about it Manila,Philippines
When we pulled into port there was big city skyline. My buddy Jim Raney (Ontose Mechanic) and I went into the marketplace in the heart of
Manila looking for dishes for his new wife. We were the only Americans in a sea of Filipinos and not once did anyone make us feel uncomfortable.

However, if our boat wasn't redirected back to Viet Nam; Australia would have been the best port ever.

Yeah I hear that!
I fell in love with a Norwegian girl in '88. Girls name was Marit. I still remember her last name too, but I won't out her here.
She was on vacation to Mallorca with 4 of her friends and apparently our relationship caused quite the row as she had a boyfriend back home...
The group of them all got in a fight and Marit ended up staying with me instead of going with her friends to the other side of the island(which we were not allowed to do) I spent 5 days with her...

*sigh*

My favorite libo locale had to be a bar on Waikiki beach that was under the patio of a hotel pool and I can't remember the name of the place. It had stairs going down to it from the sand and if you didn't know it was there you'd walk right past it ("Johnny's underwater bar" maybe?). Most bars have a big mirror on the back wall over the bar but this place had a giant window into the swimming pool. Famous for girls who would swim up to the window and lose the bottom half of their bikini, bartender would ring the big brass bell and if the girl would then come into the bar there would be a huge chorus of "show us your tits show us your tits"... which all of them did. What made that place a standout was the large number of aussie girls there on spring break ( I was on Oahu for three years). All you needed was a dick and a pulse. Hell, Richard Nixon could get laid in this bar! You didn't even need money, those aussie girls loved american marines and wouldn't hear of us paying for anything. That hotel must have had tours/ packages for them ot something because that was the place for them.
I too had a girlfriend who worked at Coronet's in Kailua. I was with her for just about six months when suddenly she ditched me. I found out from some mutual freinds that her boyfriend had come back from Korea, a darkgreen SSgt, Hmmm... she had never mentioned him. Ain't that freakin' typical???!!!

:scared: Port Lyautey, French Morocco.

My most memorable country and people was found quite by accident. It was summer '52 and I was being sent home for early E of EE. The USMC was saying "... just shut up and go away...".

We were in the Med 6th Fleet. From the Fleet went to then US Naval Station, Port Lyautey, Morocco, to catch a stateside ride. It no longer exists, having been renamed Kenitra and shut down.

Port Lyautey at that time turned out to be a friendly (to the US) Arab Country. I tell you I've become appreciative of friends, we could use some.

I really wanted to go to Rick's Cafe (down at Casablanca) & see (maybe) Humphry, Ingrid, Sam and Claude Rains, but couldn't make it happen.

Some then & now comparisons: During my time ('47-'52) we went everywhere, w/o weapons, joined the people publicly and never sensed fear. My son, later in the Military ('84-'88), was told any where, any time, when moving around off base, get into civilian clothes, there'll be less trouble that way .

Son, you deserve better than this. This feces, in my PFC view, is as a result of not trying to win anything, just rattle mouth. This political correctness, conflict resolution and multiculturalism brings on disunity.

Everything we did in those times was 1st class, rode home in the old Globemaster C-124, 4 piston engines, it was glorious. Like landing a barn must be, sheer skill and power. What a ride, only in the US.

Moderators, maybe for safety, just dump this. Wouldn't want to take a chance on upsetting young DocGreek. Gary Hall.

 Thanks, Drafter. I hadn't caught the disparity. Over the years
(47-52) I did have a little trouble with rank, I believe I made Private about 3 or so times. Don't misunderstand, I am not making light of such kid stuff, I do wish I could have been much more responsible.
Any how, I did try to make the correction, saved it but my profile came up without the correction. There are several other corrections I wished to make, and tried, but couldn't make it happen.

I'll keep after it, maybe some beautiful, blond, long legged (& rich, while I'm daydreaming?) WR will come along & be merciful and help out a harmless old man?

Stranger things have happened. Gary Hall.

Not a problem Gary, Shoot I was a 3 time LCPL, I know exactly where you coming from.

I remember one time my Co. Gunny called me over, he looks at my collar, goes, "Just checking to see what rank you are this week, think I'll just stick to using your last name. You're a damn fine Marine and squared away too, we just gotta keep you outa garrison and in the field."

Hell I don't ever remember replying to this thread. I would have to say my fav liberty spot. Would have to be at Ft. Lauderdale when we pulled in Port Down there. We where doing a MAGTF for the McDonalds Air Sea show on the USS Portland. Can't quite remember the name of the club we partied at, we got the Ft Lauderdale Police called on us. A bunch of us put a bunch of bendy straws together, and tried to drink a margarita bunch bowl on the bottom deck, all the way up at the top of the club. Plus me an Cpl Bell went to a strip club that night. We blew about $400 on lap dances, and booze. Got back to the ship had to do the "Permission to Come Aboard" deal. That didn't work out so well. The Sailor on duty just let me on anyway, then I spent the next hour talking to a Lt. on the flight deck about how much I loved the Marine Corps(I was very drunk hehe). Then after that a bunch of us snuck down the tank deck, and screwed around with the Squidys haha. Hell of a good time. Semper!!!:D

My unit VMA-211 left Chu Lai in 2/16/70 on a made for D-Day LST and headed for Iwakuni Japan. There was a very nasty Typhoon roaming around the Pacific so we pulled into Kaohsiung Taiwan for 2 days. We were the first American ship to stop there in 5 years so no need to get into the sorted details. We left and as far as I'm concerned we hit enough of the storm to throw that flat bottom around like a cork in the water.Spent some time in PI. at Cubi Pt. and Olongapol city which unless you've been there it is hard to imagine, lets just say it's pretty salty. While in Iwakuni we hit Hiroshima on weekends and had some great times there.

My favorite Libo Ports were with the 24th MEU in '06. We stopped in Marsielles, France. From there, the told us that they were selling tickets for a 2 Day trip to Paris and to Belleau Wood. I jumped at the opportunity. The tickets were expensive so not many people expressed interest. They held a meeting to pass word about the trip and at the meeting they explained that the Marine Corps was in actuality going to pay for our tickets and they just wanted to see what Marines were willing to go. So in essence...we went to Paris for free! My other favorite port was Cyprus just because of all the drunken good times there. I loved float.

I did a year in Germany with the guard after I got out of the Corps and got called up from college.

Paris is nice, Luxemburg is nice, Trier is really nice, Nuremberg is really nice for Christmas time, Munich is the best drinking city in the world and everyone has to go there at least once, the army rec city at Garmish is all kinds of fun and you can afford it, Rome was really great, as was Florence, Venice was like a very pricey Disney only set in an open rotting sewer.

The army was screwing with us because we were guard as far as working, living, and time off, and I still had three times more time off and better living conditions than I had had in the Marine air wing. All the better to see Europe.

****in' Marseilles was a hole just about as bad as Naples. My duty was shore patrol walking around the towelhead section of town keeping the drunk Marines and Sailors out that area. Only good thing was that Mickey Ds sold BEER. The trip to BW would make the stop worthwhile though.

Now TOKYO, JAPAN on the otherhand, was where it was at 24/7/365!!!

There haven't been a lot of Marines there yet, but my favorite was Sihanoukville, Cambodia. I went there with LF CARAT '10.

There are many many reasons to like this place. The exchange rate is ridiculous, even in the Americanized places. For example, you could get an awesome hotel for $9 a night, but you could get a cheap one for $3 a night. It's $2 for a 40 of this beer called Angkor which is made there. I've had many different types of beer, and this is within my top 3 now. You can get away with $15 a day for a tuktuk (taxi) driver who will stay with you all day, take you anywhere you want, and will even come back the next day. Our driver gave us a cell phone in order for us to call him the next day of libo. (No overnight for us)

The place is just absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the time on the beach, and it was sunny most of the days we were there. You can walk up to a guy and rent a jet ski for half an hour, or a banana boat for you and your friends. Everything on the beach is pretty close, and it's lined with bars. With a high tide you can sit at a bar and dangle your feet in the water.

Women, women. Now, this is probably one of the best aspects. Cambodia is a large vacation spot for a lot of Europians and even Americans. I met girls from Spain, England, Ireland, Germany, France, even some from Australia. Even then, the local Cambodian women are gorgeous and really friendly.

Now if you want to have more of a Pattaya experience you can do that too, just jump in your driver's tuktuk and he'll take you to Cambodia's version of walking street. If you know what I'm talking about then details aren't required.

So all of you Marines that liked Thailand the best, I guarantee if have the opportunity to visit Cambodia, you will like that better.

Anybody know how I can shake her !!! LMAO !!

Well, here goes a reply for an old man ... I was stationed at Kaneohe Bay in 1951. My squadron, VMF 451 helped reopen Kaneohe as it had been shut down some time after WWII. I made a lot of runs over the Pali to get to Waikiki (Kailua was a really small village then with just one little bar - that was OK for a quick liberty, but to do the town it was over the hump to Waikiki) which at that time had a really nice bar at the Diamond Head end called "The Queens Surf". The hostess there took a liking to the "kid marine" (I was underage) so that became my favorite spot.

in the 60,s the democrats had not ruin american reputation in Australia..many australia girls loved american Marines ,,there parents had told them about the war in the Pacific..It took a lot of left wing urine & burning of the American flag to kill that aussie sheela enthusiasm, but for plain cheap short liberty party ,& disgusting cheap sex, ologapo spread her infected legs wide..
Ok marine you more sound sicko disgusting than other maline but I do for $5 more, use condom,Pacita no want your war like mutant child ,built low to ground for scavenge & plunder!

I would definately have to say PI. We owned the Mariposa Bar on Magsaysay Blvd. From the Sierra Club Rock Bar to the R and B, Hip Hop bar the Florida Club. Grande Island drinking Margarita's in the middle of Subic Bay sitting in the crystal clear water. The bar was so close you didn't have to get up for your drinks. Green Beach Zambales PI. Mama De Bablyeon, the smart, funny, incredibly generous Mayor who treated the Marines on op there like her own family. While on a small operation for CSSD-32 in support of 1/9 put us on the beach for about a week. We floated from Okinawa to Subic on the USS St. Louis and that was the very first time I disembarked from a ship to a Mike Boat, over the side using a net was awesome! A coordinated WWII style beach landing (1st wave). We set up a perimeter and that's how we met Mama De Bablyeon. She cooked lumpia, adobo and succulent shrimp plus evey cold beverage you ould think of. Kids everywhere, even kids that looked suspiciously caucasian were out playing at he beach and jungle. I asked Mama if there were Americans living here and she said no.....Why? Because I said he kid over there has blond hair and blue eyes. She replied Ohhhh, that is American Souvenir. I couldn't help but laugh since I am pretty sure I knew what she meant. So back to the op, one of my radio guys was about to celebrate his birthday and I had an idea. I spoke with Mama and asked he if she could help me for a surprise birthday party. For six cases of MRE's she would roast a pig, unlimited Lumpia, shrimp, fried rice and cold drinks. As an unknown added surprise, even to me was the after dusk hum of the banka boat motor filled with a little adult fun. Needless to say this week long op was not to boring after all. The party went off without a hitch and it will be one of the most memorable times in my short career. Does anybody remember the Nippa Hut near Angeles? Even though I still have a fog in my head about this amazingly unreal party palace. There was no rank at this place. I was sitting with a group of Airforce Full Birds and their wives (no BS), drinking some concoction that was served in these huge bamboo cups with the clubs logo all over the outside. This drink was powerful. The show went on for a couple of hours with dozens of hot little filipina's putting on an array of different skits and prowness of the......Well you know. This is really hard trying to keep this thing PG. Regardless, this was an an amazing show cappe off with a volunteer from the audience. Does anybody remember the Nippa Hut? Since we were in PI for six months, many of the guys had g/f's which they had to pay a relationship fee for a day, night, week or month and these girls were your honest and faithful g/f's until you left or you dumped em. So many more stories i could tell you about this adult playland. maybe next time I will tell you the story of Bon Jovi taking care of the troops while on a layover at Clark airbase in Angeles. The Vampire Club. :iwo:

Let's see...

Ejoyed the hell out of Okinawa. Was on Futenma so I was close to Naha and 'the wall.' Plenty of good parties I don't remember too much about at the wall. BC street and whisper alley.

Angeles City, Olongapo, Barrio Barretto (Hence the nick name) were always great and accomodating. Strange though, how word of mouth they know yer there... Filipino word of mouth is faster than the telephone. Makes it tough to meet the next girlfriend. Hehe. Hung out at Wiskey River and The Blue Parrot in the barrio and usually was in Peso Jimmy's in Olongapo, though I've been to Cal Jams, Sierra Club, T's and a few of the others in Olongapo. The DMZ, Love Birds (yeah, I liked the name too), and Nipa Hut were fun in Angeles. I liked balute so much I had to go and marry one. I still get hell for all the time I spent in the bars there. LOL. Nothing like the smell of dried fish frying in the kitchen.

Korea was a fun place. Anjan ri (sp?) Camp Humphreys. Army rolls their sleves down for winter before the USMC so we were ordered to roll ours down as well to be uniform. Bunch of us thought if they want uniform let the Army keep theirs up. Also had plenty of fun in Pohang and Pusan and I've still got my mink blanket.

Liked Hong Kong a lot. Sydney was a nice place. Couldn't stay, the Corps made me wait 3 weeks after my dad died and then the day we hit port in Sydney they cared so much they made me fly out that day. Only good thing was I got to watch green peace get chased by the cops on the water and didn't have to man the rails.

Could have done without Port of Al Jabail, Saudi Arabia. Dubai, United Arab Emmerates was pretty cool. Sat by a pool drinking some strong mixed drinks at a 5 star hotel. Not a bad way to earn your combat pay.

man i have been waiting if i would never see anyone talk about Peso Jimmy's !!!! they said they had the coolest beer in olongapo. i was there with 31MAU back to back westpac's from 1980-1982 . still go back there every year. remember how will used a marker to put our names on the walls! alas Peso Jimmy's is no more in olongapo.

Ain't that freakin' typical???!!!

the club you are talking about i think is the cellar club on lewers street .

BRISBANE, AUSTRAILIA. 1974, Fox Co. 2/3, 1st Marine Brigade, aboard the U.S.S. Tulare, HQFMF didn't want to mix us with the Battalion from Okinawa so they shipped us off to Brisbane. We were the 1st U.S. Marine Unit to arrive there since WWII and Half the City met us at the docks. A 100 member Military Band played "The Marine's Hymn" (****ed off the swab jockies, They never played Anchors Away). If you were not "Adopted by a Civilian Family for 7-days, you had to be back aboard ship for Muster @ 0800 hours and you were given Liberty for another 24 hours. (The only way we could stand up was by leaning against one another). I was Smart... SHORE PATROL. Anybody got arrested, I along with my Royal M.P. "Mate" Ian "Spud" Murphy, would pick them up at the local Hoos-Cow and transport them back to the ship to get some rest before more Party Time. Spud took me and a USMC 1st Lieutenant to "Patrol" all the the Best Bars in Brisbane (we had to remove our MP armbands and pull our Dress Greens out and over our Duty Belts. A lot of the Pubs did not have bar stools just "Belly up to the Bar" put your foot up on the polished brass rail and enjoy a Pint (or Five) I don't know how many of you have had REAL Aussie Beer but it's FIVE times Stronger than anything we have. We were probably the ONLY MP's to call a cab back to the ship because non of us were sober enough to drive (the steering wheel was on the wrong side anyway, it was confusing enough Sober) OH I forgot to mention, They were so PROUD of what the UNITED STATES MARINES had done for them during WWII against the Japanese, that No One would accept our Money. A word of advice Don't ever try to Out Drink an Aussie, You will wake up in your rack back aboard ship and he will still be bellied up to the bar waiting for you to return. On our last day we had our Company Football Team (BIG MARINES) play Rugby against the 1st R.A.R.... Half of our guy's went back to Kaneohe Bay in Body Casts. Oh yeah and use your own imaginations about their Outrageous Women.... I have to carefull, My wife might read this and we were Married then too. OPERATION KANGAROO I OOOOHRAA!!

Is Mickey Mouse still there? She got in trouble in 1972.

When I was in the Philippines (Subic Bay 1974) , we had "Cindarella Liberty" either in someones home or back on the Ship by 2400 hours, or you became target practice for the National Police. I never really got use to Balutes or San Migel Beer. L8R.

Oh, my favorite happens to be the ONLY liberty port I experienced.
Subic Bay / Alongapo February 1966
A place where I lost something that was NOT very dear to me. :)

Then we were off to SE Asia for our 13 month picnic.

Carry on....

Just before the gate they had the Brig. When you passed it you could hear the prisoners hollering and the rubber hoses. You always knew better than to f--k up while in Kobe.

Best was any club in Pattaya Beach, Thailand (Cobra Gold '94), played a lot of Connect 4 at the outdoor tiki bars, a beer was 24 baht, two kinds of beer, green or brown bottle.

Second was Kinville on Okinawa, liked club East Coast Rock best, drink beer and watch heavy metal videos, then on to the Blue Moon (wink)!

Also loved several clubs in Waikiki...the Wave, Pink Cadillac, Moose Mcgillacudy's, Duke's. Ah, good times...priceless memories for a young Marine.

gemntx, I was there in 1971, on a 3 day relaxation tour, that cost $18.00. I made one day there, before I was ushered back to the ship, USS Guam LPH9. There were some beautiful women there from all over Europe. I was with two Sisters from Scotland, before I had to leave. To many Rum and Cokes.
