Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom can apply for this year’s Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship program through Sept. 28. Applications are available online.

Since the inception of the scholarship in June 2005, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc. has given 1,460 scholarships to veterans, with a value of up to $5,000 each. The money is paid to the veteran’s college over the course of his or her education. So if a student is in college for four years, the school will get up to $1,250 per year in scholarship funds to defray the cost of the veteran’s education.

So far, 687 Army veterans have received scholarships, as well as 408 Marine veterans, 58 Air Force veterans, 102 Navy veterans, and 205 members of the National Guard, according to association officials.

Among the requirements:

* Service in the U.S. military in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom since Sept. 11, 2001.

* Critical financial need.

* No more than 60 cumulative semester/credit hours by the end of the 2007 term.

* A grade point average of at least 2.0.

* “Integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.”

* U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

The program was created after former U.S. Ambassador to Spain George Argyros and his wife, Julia, visited wounded U.S. troops in a temporary hospital at Rota, Spain. Through their family foundation, the Argyros donated $5 million as seed money to launch the scholarship program, open to any soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who serves in the Iraq or Afghanistan theater. More than $10 million has been added to the fund by other donors.
