More than 2,000 troops in Camp Anaconda, near Balad, Iraq, will be able to see the new action film “Rescue Dawn” for free on the Fourth of July.

The film tells the story of Dieter Dengler, the only American to break out of a prisoner-of-war camp in the Laotian jungle during the Vietnam War. MGM Studios Inc. arranged to provide the free screening for the troops through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which operates the movie theater.

The film will be introduced with a taped message to the troops from the lead actors, Christian Bale, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies.

“Rescue Dawn” also will be released in Los Angeles and New York on July 4. It will expand to 10 markets on July 13 and go into nationwide release July 27.

“We are proud of our troops in Iraq and we wanted to do something special to honor their commitment,” said Rick Sands, MGM’s chief operating officer, in a statement announcing the showing. “Screening a film about Dieter’s heroic life on Independence Day could not be more appropriate to show our thanks to the brave men and women overseas.”
