Grooming standard changes due out soon

After more than four months of detours and at least one wrong turn, the first proposed changes to the Corps’ grooming standards in more than 10 years are expected to arrive on the commandant’s desk “pretty soon,” according to a senior Marine official at the Pentagon.

A list of 36 proposed changes was sent from the Marine Corps Uniform Board in Quantico, Va., to the sergeant major of the Marine Corps’ Pentagon office in February. It was accidentally sent back to Quantico in April, rerouted to the assistant commandant later that month, then sent back to the Corps’ senior enlisted Marine, because Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent had taken over that billet during the shuffle, the Marine official said.

The official said the proposed changes are with the commandant’s editors, who “are aware of it, know it needs to go to the commandant and expect to have it in to him pretty quick.”

A ballot circulated to sergeants major across the Corps in October solicited feedback from individual Marines about the proposed changes. Working groups at the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Quantico then looked the proposals over and made recommendations on which items the board should route up the chain, said board spokeswoman Mary Boyt in November.

“There are 36 issues the commandant is going to have to decide on, so it’s going to take some time,” she said.
