Hello,

I am a former squid looking to join the Marines and get it right this time. Can anybody give me the jist on a Data network specialist? I have a reserve job waiting for me in July and just wanted some input. It is a dream to join the Marines but to get a technical job also seems like the icing on the cake.

I have a two year old son and a Fiancee'. Im feeling guilty for leaving them but I know oppurtunities like this don't come along all the time. Well thanks in advance.

Retreads are generally required to demonstrate that they have experience, military experience, in the computer field for a cross over. You join with no such experience you are rolling the dice.

I should have added you should shoot a PM to GySgtRet. He was one of the best the MC produced in computer skills and would probably be able to give you the straight scoop.

I was told that joining the Reserves your guaranteed your MOS. By rolling the dice do you mean that I could struggle with the schooling and get placed elsewhere? Thanks for the reference and help.

Its still depends on a high ASVAB score and the training slot availability. And of course you still would need to be trained at one of our Marine Boot Camp.

I was wondering about the ASVAB issue. Im pretty sure I dont qualify for this MOS but somehow its available to me. Prior service maybe? I was an AO in the Navy, not much computer work there. Im going to ask my recruiter tommorrow.

Military crossovers generally seek to take advantage of your prior service training and place you in a similar position in your new branch. Uncle Sam already paid big bucks to train you once. The Navy didn't train you to be a Marine but they did train you to do something. If you were supply in the Navy odds are you would be supply in the Marines. If you were airwing support in the Marines odds are you would be airwing support in the Navy. See where I'm going with this?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Problem is im not sure what Marine aviation openings are around my area. I think the closest would be Columbus. I would love to be an AO in the Marines.

One other problem is I cant join the DEP because I am somewhat under the Navy IRR. So the first time I sign anything I go straight to boot camp. It is putting a bit of a time strain on my decision. Thats why any info is appreciated. I cant sit and enjoy my lifestyle while others are defending it. Its kind of like sitting on your couch while a guest cleans your house.

I had another question you guys might be able to answer. If I take that 0651 job will I ever get my hands dirty? I understand that my MOS would be technical. Say I was stationed at a reserve infantry unit would I be able to get in the field at all? Thanks

The 0651 field is a pretty damn good one, if I may say so myself. Your main responsabilities will be planning, coordinating and settup up networks, system administration, and other various network orient tasks.

In the NCO course, part of the curriculum requires you to get your CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). That's big $$. It's a great MOS that'll teach you a skill that's more needed in the civilian world everyday.
