Hey guys this is my first post here so I wanted to Introduce myself. My name is Orlando and I always wanted to be a Marine since I was young. Since I am finishing up my degree I want to eventually attend OCS in quantico. I am going in as enlisted first. I have lost 45lbs and I work out to try to prepare for MCRD Parris Island. I ship out Sep 25th. O how those shin splints are killing me, lol. But I try to run through the pain with pure motivation and I just daydream of me getting that EGA while im running. At this moment I am sore from doing free weights and assisted pullups with my recruiter yesterday. Besides rest is their nething to get rid of shin splints? They are so annoying. I wanna push my body to the limit but every1 is telling me 2 slow down b4 I hurt myself but I do not want to fail RT. So is running every other day good for me since I am starting out? 2 give my body some time for rest and recover. I also do workouts from ebooks by Stew Smith. Thanx again guys and to all the Marines I support each and every one of you. Hopefully I will stand in the elite brotherhood with you when I earn it.

I don't know crap about anatomy but maybe this (http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/lowerleg/shinsplints.htm) can help you?

Well welcome Orlando,
Let me tell you a little about me since you will find that we are in the same boat. I just finished my degree and I enlisted as well leaving on August 6th. I have been running much as well and I have similar problems with shin-splints. I actually contacted an Orthopedist today because I am similar to you and wish to push myself through the pain rather than rest. I'm just going to wait for the answer from a professional because I don't want them to get worse. This would be my ultimate nightmare and due to my overexcitement the otherday I may have pressed myself and I think it is time to see a professional. Also you are more likely to fail RT with stress fractures and otherwise if you keep pushing TOO hard...TOO early.
I've used many of the similar Stew Smith workouts. I recommend his pyramid program for pullups/pushups/crunches. You can search on this site and find many other workouts. Though I am just a poolee as well I am more than gracious to help you if you find anything in the future you need help with.
Again Welcome Aboard.

Yea I really appreciate it man, but let me know what the Doc says about the shin splints. How are you will the pullups?

Hell, you hit the nail on the head for the reason for the ol' extra inflammation with the shin splints. Yesterday was the first day I hit 20 and got 122 crunches therefore I tried to overpush the run and now I'm paying for it. I think I just need to rest a bit and I did hurt my shin a little at work so I think I may not have waited long enough from that, but I am not taking any chances!

I used to get shin splints everytime I ran after like 2-3 weeks off (holidays...leave etc;)...then someone told me about a good stretch.
Just do some calve raises where you are standing straight up. You then push up with the bottom of your ball of the foot. Almost like you're going to go to your tippy toes (sounds fruity lol...) but yeah...
Also, when you are stretching and sitting down. Put your legs straight out in front of you, and point your toes forward as hard as you can, hold it for about 10 seconds, release and repeat 3-4 times.
That should assist you.
I know it hurts. It'll pass.

Welcome Aboard...!!!! And thank you for joinging the rank of the worlds most awsome organization. I have firsthand knowledge of shin splints, I know because I had them when I went through recruit training at Parris Island. As pinful as it was I made it. Stretching has got to be one of the best pieces of advice however, I had fouund out that swimming laps also is very good for shin splints, I would seriously not run as much till they heal some. Came back any time.

I found so far that work is the culprit of my shin splints...not my running. Pulling pallets around, pushing stuff, etc. is causing undo pain on my shins as I push into the ground...granted some of these things weight 100's of lbs. Therefore, I have been advised to wear an ACE compression support for my shin/calf and so far I have no pain while at work. I would recommend one for continuous activity such as work!

Just an update this shin splint compression thing is amazing. I have gone 2 days of work now with no pain and the ability to run the next morning without pain. I would definitely recommend it...for 15 dollars its great.
Does anyone know if it would be good or bad to run in this thing, I does constrict the calf a small bit, but I was wondering if this would be a problem?

I am going to buy what you have to wear also. One of my best friends who ran track in highschool also told me to walk backwards, lol. He told me it sounded silly but according to him it works.
