So I was wondering if any Marines here have done any of the non-standard Reserve programs like Active Reserve, Active Duty Special Work, Individual Mobilization Augmentees, etc.?

The only reason why I ask is because I am wondering (although I know its highly doubtful) that if my unit isn't deploying if there is a way to volunteer for some time in the sandbox...or if I just have to wait it out and hope my unit would be called up.

I read about these programs in Marine Magazine, but I was just wondering if any Marines have first hand experiences or some better descriptions of the programs.

Sounds to me like you want to be on active duty. So just go active duty.

I'm predicting the response "I'm going to college, first."

Depends on your MOS whether or not you would be able to volunteer to go with a different unit. Honestly, if you're wanting to go over, you may as well go ahead and go active duty, because you won't get much school done during your AD time anyway. It isn't as if you can just do it for the summer.

Its actually not about schooling at all. If I wanted to go to college I would have already.

I'm doing Reserves for my reasons. Half of which I feel are legit, and the other half are probably bs mind **** games with myself.

I don't want to shy away from the topic though, so if any Marines wanted to hear my reasons, I would ask that they PM me so that we can keep this forum clean from information other Poolees wouldn't really care about. I hope that doesn't come across as rude or smart ass. If so my apologies.

Thanks for the responses, and if you think of anything else I'd like to keep updated.
