People getting you down? Telling you you're making a mistake? That's because they know nothing. Just today, someone had the audacity to tell me that I'm "a foolish, idiot kid making stupid, childish decisions" for joining the Marine Corps. When I asked him why he was working as a cashier at a second-rate grocery store at age 43, he didn't seem to have anything else to say. Don't let them bother you. Their strong words are not meant in spite, but jealousy that they don't have the same determintation and heart that you have. You and I have talked. I know you're gonna make it and when you do, they'll be kissing your backside.
Do you have a definite date yet?

LMAO @ you ktriplett. Yer gettin' to be Hard Corps.

I'll be graduating high school about three weeks before turning 17. My parents won't even consider signing for me to go in as enlisted. They said if I want to go they'll support me in ROTC or a service academy to become an officer, but they wouldn't sign for me to ship to Parris Island. I don't want to wait until I'm 18 to start. My country needs me now ... at least soon. So I figured I'd work with what I had and shoot for the Naval Academy.

Now I'm working hard to get to Annapolis and how do you think my parents are reacting? My dad randomly sings the song about the Navy and how you're stuck in the Navy, the government owns you, etc. My mom says that in the Marine Corps (and all branches of the military) I'll be giving up my freedom of thought. Apparently she thinks that structure means no one thinks.

...of course I get the, "You can't make it remarks," from just about everyone else as well. "How are you gonna lose 35 pounds?" "Do you know what it takes to be a Marine?" Oh, and my favorite one from my 17 year old cousin who just got out of JuV, "Jess, I've been away. You don't want to do it. You don't want people tellin' you what to do and when to do it and how to do it, too. I did it and let me tell ya, it was hell. I don't think you could make it through boot camp let alone four years of that at the Naval Academy! Stop bein' a silly little girl and do something like become a vet."

So now the American public is comparing Marine training to prison ... interesting, eh?

Barrio_rat
03-18-03, 11:41 AM
Sounds like they are afraid you will accomplish something they were unwilling or unable to do them selves... and you'll be doing it without them - hopefully, once you do make it to the academy, they will be more supportive and proud of you and your determination. Stay on track, yer doin' fine....

Thank you, Sergeant. People's comments don't typically bother me. I tend to get a good laugh out of them.

Sort of like in ktriplett's post:
"Just today, someone had the audacity to tell me that I'm "a foolish, idiot kid making stupid, childish decisions" for joining the Marine Corps. When I asked him why he was working as a cashier at a second-rate grocery store at age 43, he didn't seem to have anything else to say. "

At least I have a good sense of humor.

22devilpup87: I had a friend that had a hard freshman year and was over weight. His sophomore year he decided to get his grades up and get in shape to try to get into the Naval Academy. Only his parents and those of us who were on the same weightlifting team as him believed in him, every one else told him it was a ridiculous idea and he couldn’t do it. Needless to say later that year he places third in the AAU Jr. Olympics for weightlifting and three years later guess where he is? Annapolis!!! I saw him for winter vacation and he says its very hard work but he loves it. Keep trying and go for it.

Also, Ive been getting this a lot from people lately "You joined at the wrong time. You just gonna get shipped to Iraq and get killed" Any one else been getting that?

I just say, "I joined at the perfect time to help my country and I wont get killed, I'll be doin the killin" they get a weird look on their face and shut up.

I know what he meant. I was joking. What you wrote make no sense. When did i disrespect a higher rank? When did I not do what I was told? when did I ask why? How do you know how much heart I have? You dont know the crap ive gone through and made it through. That whole last post I made was joking, thats what the little smiley faces are for. Your coming on here and trying to chew me out like you've allready made it through boot camp and you know what its all about, you havent, neither have I. No matter what any one tells us, neither of us will fully know what its gonna be like untill we make it through.

Oh, and I know that heart is the most important part of making it through, but I think a little bit of being a bad ass and being a little bit crazy helps too. As long as you can take orders and listen, which ive been doing my whole life.

Ive got a friend that I grew up with and played football and wrestled with. whos crazy as hell and real mean. He went to boot last june and was a guide the whole time and graduated #2 and a Lance Corporal.

Any way no hard feelings, Im just defending my self

yeah wrbones: I knew thats what you were talking about.

Soon2BkidTx
03-18-03, 05:17 PM
Well i wasent trying to chew you out, BRO, but i have seen wrbones already chew you out...and i know you were joking...i was just trying to give you some friendly advice on what to do and what not to do cuase it seems like you still dont know...but im seriously not going to go down to your lever and try to have an argument over the Internet, and specially not disrespect this site and its moderators....you know what you have to do so do it.....and honestly im glad your friend has made it...good for him....i have like 5 family members that are Former Marines, but they arent gonna help me make it.....only yourself can make yourself make it, just like only yourself can make you quit...

oo And anyway no hard feeling, Im just trying to help a brother out!

I was the first woman Marine in our family too!

When I arrived home from PI, my mother and sister couldn't believe their eyes. The pride that evaded our home was thick. Nothin' in my life has counted so much to me as that moment - that is until I had my two sons, but that was much later. I use to joke with my boys that when they were born, they assumed the position and stood on line!

As a woman Marine, you can do anything, at anytime, under any condition, and meet any cause. You will have the ability to tackle situations that use to baffle you. You will...

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the
Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of
empire building by George Bush.

He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent
many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom
beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in
return is enough to bury those that did not return,"

It became very quiet in the room.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PRIDE

The average age of the Marine Infantryman is 19 years.

He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is

considered by society as half man, half boy.

Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to

die for his country.

He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than

wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student,

pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has

a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to

be waiting when he returns from half a world away.

He listens to rock and roll or hip hop or rap or jazz or country and 155mm

Howitzers.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is

working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.

He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can

field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less-in the dark.

He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher

and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.

He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without

spirit or individual dignity.

He is self-sufficient.

He has two sets of fatigues, he washes one and wears the other.

He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.

He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his

food.

He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run

low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his

hands.

He can save your life, or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still

find ironic humor in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short

lifetime.

He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat

and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at

rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those

around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop

talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends

their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the

price for our freedom.

Beardless or not, he is not a boy.

He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200

years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.

Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his

blood.

God created Satan;

Satan created sin'

God creaded Hell

for Satan to live in.

Satan didn't like it

and it made him cry.

So, Satan created a worse place and called it Parris I.

I thought these were pretty good sayings and thought I'd share them :-)

What really doesn't make sense is that he can die for this country but he is not old enough to have a drink

I thought it is though they take your age and subtract the years you served and if that makes you under 28 you can join

I have been ready for the Marine Corps since I was 17. I graduated in June 2002 and talked with a recruiter and now I am beyond ready. My reasons for waiting were my mothers illness but she has been encouraging me to follow my dream and make my career in the Marines! I am waiting on a recruiter to sign me up so I can defend my Country with The Best of The Best!

Yes mam. It was so cool that you did that. It felt cool standing up there next to a Marine......and actually being called up by one.
