OTTAWA (Reuters) - Prime Minister Jean Chretien said on Monday that Canada's armed forces would play no role in any attack launched by the United States on Iraq.

In the last two weeks Canada has tried hard to bridge the splits at the U.N. Security Council over Iraq but its attempts came to nothing. The United States and Britain now look set to attack Iraq without U.N. authorization.

"If military action proceeds without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada will not participate," Chretien told Parliament to storms of applause.

Canada has around 30 armed forces personnel serving with the U.S. and British contingents in the Gulf and has contributed two warships to a naval force currently stationed in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf.

Oh No..we won't have their 30 troops...What WILL we do???

Hey, the Canucks sent 30 troops to the Gulf area, that's almost 2/3rds their entire military! How can they defend their borders against Musk Ox or Moose now?

Well Sgt.. they are a torn country... Some of 'em are still tied to the UK and wish for a monarch that let 'em go over 100 years ago. The rest are French Canucks... I'll leave it at that...

Half speak French... enough said

The other half are taxed to death (nearly 50%) to support the half that don't pay taxes

Half don't know what a gun is, because of their Gun control

He!!.... that's 3 halves. No wonder they don't impress me. They can't count either.

You aint kidding, those guys drink like Marines on a 72, when we started the Seattle Police Horse Patrol back in 1973, we invited a few Royal Canadian Mounteds down to git a little insight, after the second day, and everything was over, we had a small party at thier hotel, they had more booze than our Wa. State Licquer Stores, I think I lasted about 4 hours before i passed out,one good thing came of it tho, they had a female R.C.M.P. , I started going up to Canada on my days off, She could sure ride a horse.

Just returned from Canada today after a week of fishing/drinking. It appears that democracy thrives there like it should here. Don't belittle the nooker armed forces, while small, it's been committed to hot spots around the globe since it's inception. Unlike our forces, they have committed troops for altruistic reasons.

The Somalia Coverup crap took a lot out of us. We don't have enough of a maintenance budget to keep the helos flying on a regular basis.

We did not have the proper uniforms for Afganistan, or the standard communication equipment to make sure nobody bombed us.

We just purchased some used UK subs. Turns out half of them were dented up and unsuable without more cash.

My overall assessment is that the Hell's Angels are better armed and funded! Politcal leadership is too segmented. It is up to the Minister of Defence to run things. The Prime Minister is never accused of any government shortcomings, it stops at the Ministers. The sad thing is that everyone here and the press think that this is normal and okay.

No wonder we know how to really tie one on!

"Unlike our forces---altruistic reasons."

Come on! Our troops are selfishly gaining from living in the crap conditions that they do, ready to risk or give their lives, getting a low income paycheck so we can sit on our butts in freedom and discuss fishing and drinking? You say that they are seeking personal gain from this?

Come on, you know better then that Marine!

I don't have a problem with the "nooker armed forces", but I do have a problem with anyone belittleing OUR U.S. troops!

Damn, I love freedom!

Thank you, Army, Air Force, Navy, MARINES!

troops only respond to the orders of their respective gov'ts. the canadian's have committed troops to areas under the UN in area's where there is little if any national interest. of course we (the US) has done the same at times. i don't recall where the US was much interested in committing troops to places like East Timor, Rwanda, Cyprus. Having said that, credit must be given for belated intervention in the former Yugoslavia.
