"Lord, use us to bring peace, whatever that might mean," said the Catholic priest, Navy Cmdr. Bill Devine, as the Marines listened, their heads bowed next to the muzzles of their M-16s.
"Let us pray, also, Lord, that you will use us to be your peacemakers," he prayed. "Bless our president and all world leaders in the decisions they make in the coming weeks."

After the Marines sang "Amazing Grace" from their hymnals and received communion, Devine, wearing a camouflage smock over his white robe, stayed behind to bless their medals and other symbols of their faith in God and their loyalty to the Marine Corps.

One Marine asked the priest to bless two symbols he wears around his neck: a crucifix his mother gave him and a cross he had picked up in boot camp.
