A Marine who was injured while acting as an Iraqi role player during a pre-deployment exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, Calif., is in stable condition at a hospital in Palm Springs after being medically evacuated there by airlift June 20 for an “injury in the upper chest region,” a base spokesman said.

The Marine, whose name was withheld pending next-of-kin notification, was not wearing body armor, because he was playing the role of an insurgent sniper when the incident took place, Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Cox said.

Details about the Marine’s injury were not immediately available, but there was no live-fire training being conducted at the facility at the time of the incident, Cox said.

Corps officials are investigating the incident “to ensure proper procedures were in place at the time of the training,” said Capt. Neal Fisher, a base spokesman. “That is the scope of the investigation right now.”
