WASHINGTON (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that the Bush administration is nearing a decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility. Terror suspects would be moved to and face trial at U-S military prisons elsewhere.

Senior administration officials say a consensus is building for the closure and transfer of detainees to one or more Defense Department facilities. One of them is said to be the maximum-security military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

After news of the meeting broke, the White House said that it would not take place and no decision on Guantanamo Bay's status is imminent. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe says the status of the center is "no longer on the schedule for tomorrow."

Previous plans to close Guantanamo ran into resistance from key officials including Vice President Cheney.

In Congress, recently introduced legislation would require the center's closure.
