Military families receive free PCs

By Lance Cpl. Jessica N. Aranda, MCAS Miramar

SAN DIEGO (June 22, 2007) -- Ten military families received free computers Tuesday in an event sponsored by the Armed Services YMCA, KUSI — a San Diego news station — and Computers to San Diego Kids, Inc. at the Armed Services YMCA in Murphy Canyon.

Every month, these organizations donate computers and related products to a number of families who may otherwise not have the option of in-home use of a computer.

“It’s great to provide families with the opportunity to access a computer from their homes,” said Phillis J. Barber, an executive assistant with the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. “The kids won’t have to make trips to the library just to get on the internet or do their homework.”

According to the Computers to San Diego Kids Web site, more than 28 percent of San Diego families have limited or no access to computers.

The computers not only assist children with academic endeavors, they help parents tend to household budgets.

“We needed a computer badly,” said Lance Cpl. Matthew R. Bresnahan, an avionics technician stationed at Miramar. “Now I can pay bills online at home, rather than driving to a buddy’s house.”

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Georgia D. Thomas, a machinist with Southwest Regional Maintenance Center, says her family’s new computer will allow her to keep in touch with her husband during his upcoming deployment.
