University professors from New England and the mid-Atlantic region arrive in Quantico, Va., Monday night for a weeklong crash course in the life of Marine officers — a process intended to help them counsel students interested in pursuing a commission, according to Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

The educators will tour Officer Candidates School, The Basic School and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. They’ll also get “hands-on” time with some of the Corps’ weapons and receive briefings from Marines at the Expeditionary Warfare School and Command and Staff College “so they get a well-rounded introduction to Marine officer programs,” said Maj. Wes Hayes, Recruiting Command spokesman.

The Marine Corps has hosted workshops for high school teachers at its recruit depots in San Diego and Parris Island, S.C., for several years to familiarize them with life as an enlisted Marine. The officer version, which includes university-level educators who influence potential officers, began June 11 after a test run last year in 4th Marine Corps Recruiting District, Hayes said.

Hayes called last year’s test “very successful, so now all the districts are getting to send their people.”

“This gives college professors a chance to be informed and educated about the Marine Corps officer programs so that when young men and women talk to them about possible military service, they’ll be able to tell them about what they experienced here.”
