1/3 to receive Navy Unit Commendation

First Battalion, 3rd Marines — the last leatherneck battalion to deploy to Afghanistan — will receive the Navy Unit Commendation, according to a Corps-wide message.
The award is for service from Dec. 26, 2005, to May 31, 2006, according to MarAdmin 364/07.
In 2006, the battalion participated in the largest air assault operation since 2002’s Operation Anaconda, involving six Marine and Army battalions and pushing more than 2,500 Afghan and coalition troops through the eastern Korengal Valley in April and May.
