Military Museum displays veteran's Vietnam photo exhibit

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Photographer Craig Barber left western New York to join the Marines in the late 1960s and fought in the Vietnam War.

Thirty years later he returned to Southeast Asia to capture images of the country where he fought. Today, those images are on display at the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs.

Barber grew up in Honeoye (HUN'-ee-oy) Falls, near Rochester. He served 20 months in the infantry in Vietnam, a place he returned to a decade ago, this time carrying his unique "pinhole" camera instead of a rifle.

Barber's box-like camera makes one large negative at a time. In Vietnam, he used it to take panoramic black & white photos of villages, temples and the landscape.

His traveling exhibit -- titled "Ghosts in the Landscape: Vietnam Revisited" -- is organized by the George Eastman House in Rochester.
