MEDAL FOR MARINE WHO DIED A HERO

By TATIANA DELIGIANNAKIS

June 17, 2007 -- A Brooklyn Marine killed by a sniper's bullet in Iraq last year was remembered by loved ones yesterday as the Marines posthumously presented his family with his Silver Star.

Capt. John J. McKenna IV was shot in Fallujah on Aug. 16 as he rushed in to save one of his men, Lance Cpl. Michael Glover, of Queens.

McKenna, 30, a former state trooper was feted last night at a dinner in Fort Hamilton attended by his family, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and about 150 others.

"He wanted to be a Marine almost from the time he was a little guy, there was no stopping him," said his father, John McKenna III. "It's been really tough, especially for his mother. There are still many nights that she cries herself to sleep."

His mother said McKenna was always a selfless son.

"Everything he did he did for other people," said Karen McKenna. "He'd be late for dinner because he'd stop to help someone with a flat tire. He was just that kind of guy. He was a wonderful man."
