Bridge named for soldier missing for decades

CHILI, N.Y. (AP) - A bridge over Scottsville-Chili Road will be named after soldier who'd been missing in action for nearly four decades.

Private First Class James Widener was buried at Virginia's Arlington National Cemetery last year.

Widener was a Churchville resident, who joined the U.S. Marines after graduating from Churchville-Chili High School. He died while serving in Vietnam.

The bridge crosses over the Black Creek and will be designated the James E. Widener Memorial Bridge.

Widener was 1 of 11 passengers on-board a Sean Knight helicopter taking troops into the Quang Tri province when it reportedly crashed on June 11th, 1967.

Years after the war, US and Vietnamese teams searched the crash site but found no remains. In May 2005, Vietnamese officials notified the US government of possible human remains buried inside a district security compound nearby.
