VINELAND -- The 2008 Friends of Historic Vineland calendar will focus on one of Vineland's most historically and culturally important groups -- veterans.

Published every year, the calendar highlights various aspects of public service and features pictures from Vineland's past.

The committee responsible for the calendar's creation met Thursday at the Civil War monument in North East Corner Park to discuss plans and ask for contributions.
Joseph Hampton, one of the members of the Friends of Historic Vineland's calendar committee, said the calendar is a good way to preserve and pay tribute to the town's history.

"It's very important," he said. "We have to pass on information so that the next generations can learn from it."

The front of the calendar will feature a picture of one representative from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Respective emblems for those services also will be featured.

A picture of a veteran will decorate each page of the calendar.

The committee requested that anybody with high-quality pictures of veterans -- or the war effort in general -- send them in.

The committee will make copies of the pictures for use in the calendar.

According to Hampton, Friends of Historic Vineland also are collecting artifacts from Vineland's history and considering opening a museum.

"History needs to be preserved," Hampton said. "That's our goal. We preserve history."
