IRON MOUNTAIN — George Zahn, 79, World War II Marine veteran, died peacefully early Friday morning, June 8, 2007, in Iron Mountain, following a brief illness.

Mr. Zahn was born on Jan. 27, 1928, in Faithorn, Mich., the son of Charles and Grace (Cannon) Zahn and resided in Faithorn most of his life.

On Sept. 22, 1948, he married the former Anna Mae Savord in Indiana and she preceded him in death in 1996.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1945 through 1947 with duty in the Pacific area and China.

Most of his life he worked in farming, logging and as a trucker and carpenter.

George was a member of Teamsters Local 328 for 20 years, American Legion Post 340 of Hermansville for 55 years as of 2007 and was a life member, commander of Post 340 for eight years, seven of them consecutive, Sons of the American Legion Post 340 for five years and IXL Museum in Hermansville life member. He was a life member of the China Marine Association and volunteered at the V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain for five years, with 1,600 hours of service.

George was the first graduate from North Central Area Schools under the Diplomas for Veterans Program in 2001 and was the 11th District commander for the American Legion for 2002-03.

His greatest love was his farm, serving his country, his children and helping others.

Mr. Zahn is survived by three daughters, Kathleen (Robert) LaRoche, Hermansville, Sherry (Mark) Thaler, Idaho, Kelly (Mark) Street, Faithorn; one son, George (Sandy) Zahn Jr., Wisconsin; one brother, John (Rose) Zahn, Faithorn; three sisters, LaVerne Moore, Stephenson, Ella (Matt) Gurgall, Hermansville, Mary Bond, Norway; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Mary Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna Mae; a brother, William; and three sisters, Katheryn, Betty and Margaret.

Friends may call at the Allo Funeral Home in Spalding on Monday between 3 and 7 p.m. (CDT) and again on Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Services will be conducted by members of the Marine Corps and the Hermansville American Legion Post 340 in the funeral home at 1 p.m.

Committal services with military rites will take place in Faithorn Riverside cemetery at 2 p.m. A luncheon will follow at the Hermansville American Legion Post Hall.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Allo Funeral Homes.
