The USS Stennis participated in exercises this week in which it fended off attacks from five small boats. The Bremerton-based aircraft carrier and several other ships conducted the war games in the Persian Gulf. It was called a fast-attack craft exercise.

Five hovercraft vehicles that generally ferry Marines to shore simulated attacking boats. The landing craft tried to attack every ship in the formation there were six while facing limitations in maneuverability in a strait. The ships, based on each of their capabilities, were put in the best positions to protect the force as a whole.

The threat is extremely real," said Lt. Kevin Ralston, action officer for the exercise. "We saw what happened to USS Cole when it was attacked by a small boat. We want to be ready at all times to handle whatever is out there."
