TOWN OF BROOKFIELD - They were just four Marines who gathered in a recruiting center here to give plaques to two World War II veterans, but the gratitude they expressed Wednesday came on behalf of the entire Marine Corps and the nation itself.
Earl Honeyager and Al Exner, both of Waukesha, received plaques from Joe Deloria, local coordinator of the Marine Corps League and Marines at the recruiting center Wednesday, the 63rd anniversary of the D-Day invasion of World War II.
"I hope this kind of touches the heart and lets you know how we feel," Deloria told Honeyager.
"Thank you, kindly," Honeyager replied.
Honeyager, also a Marine who served at Bougainville and Guadalcanal, was aboard his ship near Vella Lavella one night when it was struck by enemy fire.
