SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. — Authorities were investigating whether arson was the cause of a fire at the home of an Iraq war veteran who was killed last month in a shootout with police on Interstate 94.

The fire at the home of 28-year-old Brian Skold was Wednesday night.

No one was living at the home at the time of the fire, Police Chief Curt Gullickson said. He would not say why police think arson may be to blame.

The amount of damage wasn’t immediately clear.

Skold served in Iraq from November 2004 to December 2005.

He died May 27 during a shootout with police outside of Osakis. Initial reports indicate he had left Sauk Rapids with a loaded gun, and family told police he was suicidal. He led police on a chase through Alexandria for about 20 miles. Authorities eventually stopped his car and Skold engaged in a standoff with police for several hours. He then fired his shotgun, and police returned fire, killing him.
